[HMC] Hair Mask Challenge ~ Entry #2: Marc Anthony - Repairing Macadamia Oil Deep healing Conditioning Treatment

Alright, round two! This review and the next one I will be posting later this week kind of coincide with each other since they are the same brand. Ulta was having a buy one get one free sale on all Marc Anthony hair products, so I picked up this one and the Oil of Morocco Deep Hydrating Conditioning treatment. I haven't tried that one yet, but I will within the next few days.

I also wanted to discuss something that I hear in my store almost every day. And that is the subject of sulfates in hair products. I get people in who ask me for a good sulfate-free shampoo, but when I ask them why they need a shampoo without sulfates, they almost always don't know. "My friend said it's great", or "I just heard it's great for your hair". Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (there are others, but this one is most common) is nothing more than a lathering agent, it's what gets your shampoo into a nice thick lather.

The benefits of having of a sulfate-free shampoo are mainly for those who spend hundreds of dollars on getting their hair colored either at a salon or through box colors. The sulfates can eat away at your hair color and cause your gorgeous color to fade faster than usual and in some people it may dry out your scalp. I personally have never had problems with shampoos with sulfates since as most of you know, I bleach my hair. Which brings me to my next point: I often have women come in with GORGEOUS blonde hair asking for a sulfate-free shampoo claiming that it's gonna help them preserve their hair color. What hair color? You stripped your hair of all color when you put bleach on it! If you have no hair color to begin with and want to preserve your blonde hair, sulfate-free shampoos are probably not the best option for you. That's what violet shampoos are for. But that's another subject entirely.

The reason I bring up the sulfate-free thing in the first place is because I am now noticing that companies are putting "Sulfate-free!" on some of their products that never in a million years would ever have sulfates. And it's suckering in all these clueless people to buy their products. This hair mask by Marc Anthony is not different, they have it right there on the package. This next part is important: Conditioners or hair masks of any type will not and should not have any sulfates in them, ever. When was the last time you used a hair conditioner and it started foaming up like the shampoo did? Never. That's right.

---

As mentioned above, Ulta was having a buy 1 get 1 sale on all Marc Anthony Products and the two products that I got were at a cheap price point so I decided to give this a try. They both come in packets but surprisingly have quite a bit of product in each packet. I got 4 uses out of this one packet so it is well worth the $2.99 price point.

However, the product itself hit way under my expectations for a great hair mask. The smell was amazing, kind of fruity, yet not overpowering. The formula was pretty thick which I love in a hair mask, so it coated my hair evenly and nicely. After shampooing and applying the mask for my standard 10-15 minutes, I washed it out. My hair was soft, but not silky like some of my favorites leave my hair, and while there was some shine to my hair, not as drastic as I prefer. The first three times I used this product, I hated it. I would use it, and head to work and my hair just wouldn't be soft at all. I saw no difference between this and my normal conditioner. I found better results when I used my conditioner after the mask, but I don't think I should have to use a conditioner after an ultra hydrating mask.

The main ingredient, obviously, is Macadamia Nut Oil, which is oil taken from the macadamia nut. There are a lot of great benefits of this oil, one being that it is not greasy at all. The idea of putting oil in your hair can be a little frightening to some people, but this oil absorbs so quickly it doesn't even give it a chance to grease up. Macadamia Nut Oil contains proteins and other awesome ingredients that contribute to your hair and skin, keeping them looking young and healthy! Read more about this ingredient here.

It also contains Bamboo which I believe is the ingredient that the packaging refers to that "rejuvenates and reconstructs". I tried looking up some information on this ingredient but all that came up was bamboo uses for home and stuff of that nature, I did find an article that mentioned bamboo may help with baldness, but I didn't find it to be a credible source.

If you are looking for a good hair mask on the cheap, I would definitely recommend this one to try. The reviews on Ulta.com are particularly good, however, it just wasn't for me. I would much rather spend the extra money and buy something that makes my hair a little bit softer and shinier. We'll see how the other mask works, but I think I will skip it for the next entry and do a professional hair care brand next so you can compare and contrast a little bit.

In Conclusion:

Matthew
